I installed an extension just to see what was actually happening

Turns out, flying blind has a cost

A common reason people quickly hit their Claude token limit is that they never know where they are with the usage. Unfortunately, you don’t get a Usage tab unless you purchase the Pro plan from Claude. That is, as long as you are on the free plan, you are flying blind. Even with the Pro plan, you need to go to Account Settings -> Usage to view the limits, which can be difficult when you are in the middle of a conversation. A browser extension I came across, Claude Counter, offered a more convenient way to keep track of where I was with token usage. Claude Counter introduces a token usage tracker next to the Claude chat box. This way, you can keep track of where you are with sessions and weekly usage limits. The extension works great with Claude’s free plan as well. The extension requires a slightly lengthy installation, but is privacy-friendly and accurate for the most part. The extension used to display the number of tokens per message, but this function doesn’t seem to work right now. Regardless, I’ve used Claude Counter to keep track of what was burning my limit.

In the first instance, only a few tokens were consumed, and the number depended on the length of the prompt and the response. However, things change when you reach the tenth message in the same thread. Subsequent messages on the thread tend to consume an extreme number of tokens for a single reason: Claude reads all the conversations every time you send a message on the same thread. For instance, if you asked Claude to create a PPT and asked another question on the same thread, Claude will go through the PPT and everything else on the thread. While this feature is designed to ensure contextually relevant responses, it also burns your Claude usage limit. I’ve had a similar situation where creating the PPT took around 6000 tokens, whereas one of the following responses cost me close to 30000 tokens.

Understanding how previous conversations in the thread affect Claude’s token consumption has changed how I use the service. Earlier, I used to stick to the single thread as much as possible because I didn’t want to lose the context. More importantly, I believed this additional context would provide significant value to the response. These days, I am more mindful of where I follow this approach. I don’t start a new conversation for every new thought, though. Instead, I try to understand whether the response could benefit from the previous conversations. For instance, I may use Claude to create multiple PPTs for lectures, and I may not want the second PPT to inherit the first PPT’s context. However, if continuity of thought matters, I will ensure that everything remains in one thread. This mindfulness has helped me stop burning Claude’s usage limits without purpose.

This is a convenient way to ensure that all your responses are streamlined. Still, it also means each response will use several tokens to consider the baseline information you have provided. As a result, even a simple request made through Claude Projects can make you meet the limit sooner. I had once added a 100-page syllabus document to a Claude project I created for admin assistance. As you might guess, only a few chats with this project were enough to exhaust the usage limits of my free Claude plan. The solution is simple. You can audit the project context and remove superfluous instructions or documents.
