Important Things to UnderstandExpert Tips and InsightsImportant Things to UnderstandWhy This MattersImportant Things to UnderstandKey Features You Should KnowImportant Things to UnderstandExpert Tips and InsightsFinal ThoughtsKey Features You Should KnowFrom swarms of lovebugs along the Gulf Coast to dust storms on the Southern Plains and pollen blanketing nearly the entire country, keeping your car clean this time of year is a real challenge. And that’s not even counting the daily barrage of rain, mud, and road grime. Some folks don’t mind, treating their dirty car like a rolling archaeological dig.
But car enthusiasts are different; we take pride in keeping our vehicles clean and looking their best. That often means frequent car washes. What you don’t want to do is take a dirty car and make it worse by using improper washing techniques.
The best way to avoid that is to avoid automatic car washes. Not all automatic car washes are the same, and some are better than others, but none are as good as washing your car on your own.Protect your paint with proper washing techniquesUse the two-bucket method to reduce scratchesThe first thing you want to do is try to avoid washing your car in harsh, direct sunlight if at all possible. The problem with washing in the bright sun is that it heats up the paint and can quickly dry the water on the car.
This can leave behind water spots and even mineral etching that will require an orbital polisher to remove. If you must wash in harsh sun, wash in small sections so you can wash and dry quickly before the sun has a chance to do damage. Dragging a dirty wash mitt across the hood of your car won’t do it any favors.
That is why the two-bucket wash method is best. One bucket is filled with water and your preferred car wash shampoo. The other bucket is filled only with water.
Both buckets should contain a grit guard. I like to use two totally different buckets to avoid any risk of confusion as I wash my car. After you have hosed your car down, dip your wash mitt into the shampoo-filled bucket and clean a section of the car.
Then dip the wash mitt in the water-filled bucket to remove any dirt and grime, which should settle below the grit guard. Then you can dip the mitt back into the shampoo-filled bucket and wash the next section of the car. Another tip for washing with this method is to try to avoid using the wash mitt in a circular motion.
Try to move the mitt in straight lines in the direction of the airflow. For example, from the front of the hood to the back of the hood. This reduces the risk of causing swirl marks.
And even in the unlikely event that you do still cause a micro scratch, a small, straight scratch will not be as visible as a circular one. This 16-piece Chemical Guys kit includes everything needed for a professional wash at home, from a pressure washer foam cannon to premium vehicle cleaners.Proper drying techniques prevent paint damageUse the right tools to prevent water spots and scratchesThe best way to dry the car is to use a blower. But not just any blower. It must be one designed for drying cars.
These blowers use filtered air, unlike most leaf blowers. If you use a leaf blower, you risk blowing projectiles into your paint. If you don’t have a blower, that is okay; you can use a quality microfiber towel.
If using the towel method, it is best to spray the car while it is still wet with a quick detailer that will act as a drying aid. It makes the water easier to remove and lubricates the surface, further reducing the risk of scratches. When using the microfiber towel, try to dry in straight lines, just like you did with the wash mitt.
When you are drying your car, make sure to get in all the nooks and crannies. Door jambs, trunk seals, and other areas and spots where water likes to collect. Don’t let it rest there.
It will either dry and leave spots or leak out onto other painted surfaces as you drive, and then dry and potentially stain those areas. So, grab another microfiber towel and hunt down these hidden water-gathering places.A clean car is more than just a vanity project for enthusiasts. Proper washing techniques help preserve the paint, ensure better resale value, and prevent small cosmetic issues from turning into expensive repairs later on.Before your next road trip, check these five things on your vehicle5 critical checks to make before taking your next summer road tripProtect your investment one wash at a timeThe good news is that properly washing your car does not require professional detailing skills or a garage full of expensive equipment.
Patience, good microfiber towels, the two-bucket method, and avoiding careless automatic washes will already put you far ahead of most drivers on the road. A careful hand wash also gives you the opportunity to inspect your vehicle for rock chips, cracked trim, worn tires, or fluid leaks before they become larger problems. Most importantly, washing your car should be enjoyable.
For many enthusiasts, it is part therapy session and part bonding experience with the machine that does so much for you. Whether you are caring for a brand-new Audi RS model, a weathered project car, or a faithful daily driver with 150,000 miles on the clock, taking the time to wash it correctly is one of the easiest ways to keep it looking its best all year long. Thanks for reading this tutorial on HunterSam.
